Animating a Fresh Approach to PSAs

In mid-2021, as part of their Toward Zero Waste program, Snowy Valleys Council began the rollout of their new green FOGO kerbside bin (Food Organics, Garden Organics), and had planned a PSA-style education campaign to help it get off to a running start. Working with the talented team at Kindred Design, they produced a set of fun and quirky characters to inform locals about the function and purpose of the new bin, and I was approached to animate their designs into three explainer videos.

With the designs, storyboarding, scripting, and voiceover work all prepared beforehand, I was able to get right into the animation process - bringing their assets, message and story together into the three videos.

With their bold graphics, character-driven approach and engaging format, the initiative was a guaranteed success, and the anticipated impact in waste-to-landfill marked a great step toward reducing the region’s environmental footprint. This project turned out to be a great case study for why 2D animated explainer videos can be so effective - presenting important information in a concise, bite-sized format that appeals to a wide demographic.
