After seeing my recent explainer video for Wagga Wagga City Council’s Community Strategic Plan, Sutherland Shire Council approached me to create a similar animation for their own community. They wanted to create a campaign to explain the purpose of the CSP and encourage residents to get involved and have their say in shaping the future of their community. While the general idea was in line with the Wagga Wagga project, the team brought their own ideas and script to the video, which, along with their unique visual style, allowed me to find a new creative approach to the project.
The brief involved taking their script and graphic style with continuous linework over simple colours, and creating a PSA-styled animated explainer video to appeal to a wide demographic of people in their community. In line with the brief, I animated the linework style to maintain their familiar hand-drawn feel while connecting the visual elements into a cohesive narrative. With the animation keeping pace with their scripted voiceover, I used simple techniques and embellishments to highlight some of the more important details and keep the audience engaged throughout the video.
Leading up to their CSP review period, Sutherland Shire Council gathered plenty of valuable feedback from their community, hearing from a range of different voices on multiple platforms. In particular, they used the explainer video in a social media advertising campaign and found good results - nearly 700 clicks from more than 25,000 views. With a clear message delivered through an engaging medium, the council was able to create a plan that represents everyone in their community.
