Deeper Community Engagement with a PSA Animated Video

Through 2024 and into early 2025, the Wagga Wagga City Council were in the process of creating their 2050 Community Strategic Plan - a document that guides policy decisions for the long-term future of the region. Besides elections, consulting on the plan is the most direct pathway for members of the public to have their voice heard and contribute to the community. As a part of their engagement process, the council ran a campaign to reach diverse voices in the community and ensure that every opinion is heard and represented.

With a script ready to go, I was engaged to create a 2-minute animated explainer video using their existing style guide, assets and new illustrations as needed. The brief asked for a clear and concise PSA about why the CSP is so important before detailing how and when people can get involved.

Working from the script, I began my process with storyboarding the full video while creating new illustrations to fit between their existing assets, before animating and layering the voiceover with music and other audio effects. From the full 2-minute video, we cut together a shorter 15-second version to use on social media and reach a wider audience of people.

Looking back on the full process, their outreach campaign made a great impact and the council not only gave the community a great opportunity to put their ideas forward, but they also gathered a whole lot of valuable feedback. Their social media campaign reached over 75,000 views across platforms, resulting in nearly 2500 submissions toward the plan.
