Using Animation for an Unbiased, Factual and Concise Message

During the 2021 Wagga Wagga City Council election, voters were also expected to vote on a referendum to potentially change how the mayor is elected. The council had planned to run an educational campaign to inform people about the additional step in their usual voting process while presenting the details without any bias. To get all of that across in the way they wanted, the council looked to animation.

Having already planned out the storyboard, script, I was approached to create an animated explainer video to meet their goals of impartiality, simplicity and broad demographic appeal. Following their script and storyboard, an animated explainer video format made it relatively easy to present the necessary information in a digestible, engaging way - even including the voting form to build on the familiarity for the viewer.

In all, the campaign achieved exactly what the council had hoped - so well in fact that Kiama Municipal Council sought permission to reuse the video, swapping in an illustration of their own building and a palette swap to match their branding.
