As the first Festival of W, coming from the previously-run Lost Lanes micro-festival, Wagga Wagga City Council were gearing up for an even bigger event to be held over two winter weeks. Like previous years, FoW 2022 was ready to celebrate all of the local music, food, drink, and the wonderful Wiradjuri culture present within the vibrant community, and share it with an even bigger influx of visitors.
Once again, the city council wanted to promote the festival on social media with a pair of dynamic animations that conveyed the highlights of what to expect from the festival.
The Wiradjuri word Waga: place of dance, place of celebration, provided the inspiration to base the designs around movement. It led to some simple but effective concepts, which saw two different creative approaches realised. One, a 2D animation that used a low-poly style of illustration, transforming from one shape to another. And the 2nd, a 3D animation showcasing the ‘W’ surrounded by hints of the festival's themes - wintery comforts, delicacies and entertainment.
With the scroll-stopping appeal of motion graphics, the council successfully spread the word and attracted a large crowd to Wagga Wagga. Festival of W turned out to be a huge success, inspiring a wonderful sense of community involvement throughout the two weeks it was live. With the immediate success of the event, the Festival of W found a place on many people’s watch list - local and visitors alike.
